which GPS antenna?

Post by sailor »

Hello,
I am wondering which GPS antenna I need for the QK-A027 AIS GPS receiver. The description states that the device includes a GPS receiver, so that it would need a passive antenna only to catch the signal. The GPS antenna you have for sale is however an active antenna that includes a GPS receiver.
Is there an actual GPS receiver integrated or is the LS NMEA input just being mutilpexed with the HS AIS-NMEA input?
As the VHF needs a LS NMEA GPS signal, how can I get this from the device ? The output NMEA is needed to be HS to connect to the plotter.
Thank you for a practical solution.

Hi Andrew,
Passive GPS antenna is antenna that have no amplification stage(no amplifier), while active GPS antenna normally have a LNA to amplify the GPS signal. Both don't have GPS receiver. Hope this makes sense to you.

How come the GPS antenna can put out the GPS NMEA sentence? or don't they?
